Varmam therapy
The role of Varmam Therapy in management of Autism spectrum disorder
Background:
In our Autism treatment protocol, Varma therapy (derived from Varma kalai of Ancient Tamil tradition) has an important place. It is non- invasive by all means. It is about the stimulation of vital points in the body which in turn release the inborn healing capacity of the body. These points can be stimulated in the prescribed way for the healing.
Objective:
The choice of Varma points to be administered to the child is up to the sole discretion of the medical practitioner who is well-trained in Varmam. Varma can be used in isolation. The prerequisite for applying the Varma therapy to children in the spectrum needs to be followed strictly. It is vital to connect to the child before applying Varma stimulation since most children with ASD have Tactile defense (Tactile hypersensitivity) and any violation of this will lead to non-cooperation from the child and non-beneficial results. Hence we ensure connecting to the child slowly and methodically and also with reinforcements, if necessary. We believe in gentle enhancement and also along with other therapeutic practices for complimentary benefits. The following Varma points (not just limited to this list) are very beneficial in children with Autism spectrum disorder.
